Rotary and Schools work Together
Over the last month Rotarians from the Alliston Club have had the opportunity to visit with students from a number of schools in the area.
Dictionaries to Alliston Schools
The grade five students at Ernest Cumberland were excited to each receive their own Rotary Webster Dictionary. Within each personalized dictionary the 4-way test is listed. Rotarian Joan Hayward explained the 4-Way test to the students and helped them understand how they can use the test when they have to make a difficult decision.
Dictionaries were distributed, as well, to grade 5 students at Holy Family and St. Paul’s Catholic Elementary Schools. At each of the 3 schools, Rotarians stressed the importance of volunteering, even beginning at a young age, to help make a difference in our community and abroad. The students were encouraged to get involved right away and, as inspiration, the Rotary Club of Alliston’s volunteer work was highlighted.
Alliston Community Christian School
The Alliston Christian School recognized End Polio Week with a simulated immunization administered by Rotarians. Senior students then applied the “purple pinkie” to the younger students to indicate they had been immunized and were safe from the polio virus. This is the same process they use in India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan to help volunteers know which children have been immunized. The students left with a better understanding of the huge effort needed to eliminate wild polio from the last 4 endemic countries.
At Remembrance Day ceremonies the school raised $76 for the new Alliston Cenotaph. This donation will assist the Rotary Club of Alliston in the funding of a granite bench at the newly built cenotaph.
EarlyAct Comes to St. Paul’s Catholic School
EarlyAct is a Rotary based service club for elementary school students. On November 15th, the St Paul’s Catholic Elementary School EarlyAct club held its charter meeting. Rotarians had earlier presented the bell and gavel to the co-presidents and on November 15th the new flag was raised and over 40 students were presented with their EarlyAct pin and welcomed into membership in the club. The club will be meeting twice a month and looking at school, community and international projects that they can participate in. Thank you to the staff at the school for helping get this great endeavour started.
